Initial sketches to illustrate scale, composition and colour palette.
Once the composition was given the go ahead by the client, I headed to Martina Lesar's studio in Caledon to talk about wool. With my existing stash of worms in hand, she used my sketch to estimate how much wool would be needed and we discussed tones and shades. Martina has an excellent eye for colour and her expertise is a true gift!
This piece, measuring 18"x48", will eventually be a wall hanging so I wanted to use a backing with a bit more stability. The final design was drawn onto rug warp (rather than my usual linen) and the slow process of hooking began...
Ochres, golden yellows, amber, mustards...
So many great greys! Morse Code, Kodiak Bear, Driftwood, Arrowhead...
I'm lucky to have a ridiculously large coffee table that has been with me for 20+ years. It's a beast of a worktable that allows me to spread out and do whatever needs to be done. Sewing, hooking, cutting, sorting wool. it all takes place in the middle of my living room. And yes, when I need to stand on the table, I simply do.
